In 2021, Pimcore is already listed as a “promising DXP provider” in the renowned Forrester report “Now Tech: Digital Experience Platforms, Q2 2021”. The various DXP solutions are evaluated based on the functional segments of commerce, content, and data management. In 2025, Pimcore was also listed in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Digital Experience Platforms for the first time.
Pimcore changed its licensing model in 2025 and switched from GPLv3 to the new Pimcore Open Core License (POCL) to avoid legal uncertainties and compliance conflicts in the future. All Pimcore editions are licensed under the Pimcore Open Core License (POCL). With the POCL, Pimcore continues to offer its users access to the complete source code for the Pimcore platform so that the platform can be fully customized to individual requirements. The Community Edition of Pimcore is available free of charge to companies with an annual turnover of less than 5 million euros, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions. All other companies must switch to one of the commercial editions after the license conversion. The Professional Edition, the Enterprise Edition, and the Enterprise Edition PaaS are available for this purpose.
The Pimcore E-Commerce Framework is part of the Enterprise Edition and the Enterprise Edition PaaS. In addition to the Pimcore Enterprise Extensions, these editions also include extensive manufacturer services and long-term support.
The Pimcore 12 version was released in 2024. The update established compatibility with the PHP framework Symfony 7.3; the default version is 6.4. Pimcore relies on ExtJS 7 and PHP 8.4 in its technology stack. Thanks to the seamless integration of the open source search engine elasticsearch, Pimcore offers a powerful scaling option that is particularly interesting for e-commerce projects that include numerous products and product variants.
The Pimcore e-commerce framework is an innovative commerce solution that can be used to implement both classic online stores and headless systems. Just like the Spryker Commerce OS or commercetools, the Pimcore framework is based on individual API-controlled components that can be combined with each other to create highly individualized and sophisticated commerce solutions in the B2C, B2B, and D2C sectors. Pimcore does not offer an out-of-the-box store; the focus here is clearly on customized e-commerce applications such as travel booking and ticketing systems, online configurators, and the integration of the commerce module into complex DXP solutions. Pimcore is not limited to one store frontend but offers the option of connecting very different frontend applications. These can include mobile apps, for example, but also applications from the areas of voice commerce, IoT, or agent-based commerce.
Pimcore's commerce framework is suitable for both B2C projects and digital B2B business models. The price management, shopping cart, and checkout modules include a range of B2B functionalities. Based on this, customer-specific prices and graduated prices, the aggregation of products and prices, as well as the support of product configurators in the shopping cart or complex checkout processes (e.g. approval processes or individual offers) can be mapped using individual extensions.
Pimcore's Digital Commerce Framework can be extended using programming interfaces (API) so that third-party systems (ERP, CRM) can be easily connected. Companies that sell large product ranges, many product variants, or very complex products, that want to embed their online offering in a multichannel scenario or operate stores in different languages can also benefit from other digital products on the Pimcore platform. In addition to the commerce framework, the platform provides very powerful solutions in the areas of data management (PIM, MDM, DAM, CDP), content management and digital experience (DXP). As part of the Pimcore platform, the Digital Commerce Framework is therefore ideally suited to implementing complex cross-channel enterprise solutions and bringing together all relevant systems and processes in a consolidated platform.
The Pimcore e-commerce framework can be expanded to include AI functions that dock directly to the data core. Companies can connect any AI models, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google and thus remain technologically independent. Thanks to a partnership with Hugging Face, a broad model ecosystem is also available. This means that productive AI use cases can be implemented in Pimcore along the entire value chain.
The Pimcore Copilot is also part of the Pimcore platform. The Copilot automates recurring tasks, generates content, and provides users with context-sensitive support in PIM, DAM, and DXP. Typical use cases include AI-supported attribute enrichment, the creation of consistent product descriptions for different channels, or the automatic assignment of assets to products. This reduces manual effort, simplifies product range maintenance, and improves time-to-market. Technically, Pimcore covers the execution of AI models as well as training scenarios, embeddings, and RAG workflows. This allows retailers, for example, to build advisory functions, semantic search, or chat experiences based on their own product and knowledge data.
The Pimcore Digital Commerce Framework is a powerful and flexible solution for sophisticated, individual e-commerce projects that cannot be mapped with a standard store solution. With its modular framework approach, Pimcore's Commerce Framework is similar to Spryker Commerce OS, which is also geared towards highly individualized and innovative commerce solutions. Like Spryker , Pimcore therefore generally requires greater development effort and corresponding expertise. Store systems such as Shopware, Adobe Commerce or Shopify Plus, which offer out-of-the-box solutions, are therefore often the better choice for simple projects.
Pimcore provides the most important e-commerce functionalities – such as pricing, carts, checkout, payment, and orders – for the B2C sector as well as for the B2B sector. Especially in combination with the data management and content management functionalities of the Pimcore platform, Pimcore offers a very strong overall package for complex, individual enterprise projects, which, as an open API-first platform, also offers the option of seamlessly connecting external systems.
